Beagle Shih Tzu Mix Breed Facts:
The name “beagle” comes from the Old English word “bēowulf”, which means “bear-man”. The term was used to refer to a man who hunted bears with a bow and arrow.
The first known reference of the term being applied to dogs dates back to 1812. Today, it refers to any dog that hunts or scavenges for food.
In the United States, there are two main breeds of beagles; the Staffordshire Terrier (or “sturdier”) and the American Pit Bull Terrier (or “pit bull”). These two types have different physical characteristics.
Sturdy Beagles tend to be larger than pit bulls. They typically weigh between 30 and 40 pounds while pit bulls average around 20 pounds.
Sturdy beagles usually stand at about 14 inches tall, while pit bulls average around 12 inches tall.
Pit Bulls tend to be smaller than sturdy beagles. They typically weigh between 15 and 25 pounds while sturdy beagles average around 20 pounds.
Pit bulls usually stand at about 13 inches tall, while sturdy beagles average around 11 inches tall.
Both types of dogs are highly intelligent and will do well in most homes because they both have similar personalities. However, the temperament of each type varies greatly depending on their upbringing and training history.
Sturdy Beagles are much more affectionate than pit bulls, which are not particularly affectionate at all. Sturdy beagles have an easy-going nature and do very well with children.
They are sweet and playful. Pit bulls are more energetic and may not always get along with children since they can be too rambunctious for smaller kids. Pit bulls also need plenty of exercise.
Sturdy Beagles are generally good with other pets. Pit bulls can have aggressive streaks and may be more likely to fight with other animals, especially dogs of the same gender.
Pit bulls also have a reputation for being highly protective of their owners and may act aggressively towards strangers, including friends and family.
Both sturdy beagles and pit bulls do well in an apartment setting. They are fairly quiet and do not typically bark excessively.
Sturdy beagles do have a tendency to roam while pit bulls are more likely to stay close to home. Sturdy beagles are better suited to a yard setting.
Sturdy beagles and pit bulls both shed moderately. Regular grooming is recommended.
Sturdy beagles and pit bulls both have strong jaw muscles which means they can bite hard enough to break skin. It’s important that you teach your dog not to bite humans unless given the command to do so.
Both of these breeds are prone to obesity and should only be fed about one cup of food a day. They are also prone to eye and ear infections so it’s important that you have their eyes and ears checked regularly.
Both sturdy beagles and pit bulls have life expectancies of around 12 years.
Sturdy Beagle, Pit Bull (Pit Bull Type)

The Beagle is a short-legged, long-bodied dog with a square shaped head. The skull is wide and the muzzle is fairly long and slightly curved.
The ears are small and thin and can stand erect or be folded. The teeth should form a scissors bite. The eyes are large and dark and the front legs are substantial. The feet are rather wide. The short fur is either stu color or white and may have some black tips. There should be a solid white mark on the tip of the tail, the chin, and both sides of the chest.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog with a muscular build. The head is somewhat rectangular in shape and the ears are small.
The jaws are powerful with an undershot bite. The coat can be any variety of colors and the skin is loose. The tail is typically docked to avoid injuries during fights.

The Beagle is a pack hound that originated in England bred to hunt smaller animals and wild boar. These days, Beagles are kept as pets or used for tracking, search and rescue, and hunting.
Their sense of smell is strong enough to follow a scent for days at a time even if the trail is days old. Because of this, they are sometimes used by police to find missing people.
The American Pit Bull Terrier is a powerful dog with an exceptionally strong jaw. They are related to the English Bulldog and the Bull Terrier and were bred by crossing these dogs with terriers.
They are associated with the early days of dogfighting but are now kept as loving pets or used for sport and protection. They are also used as search and rescue dogs.
Both dogs are typically healthy but Beagles are prone to ear infections and Pit Bulls can suffer from a variety of ailments including sunburn, skin allergies, hip dysplasia, bloat, cataracts, and cancer. Both dogs have a life expectancy of 12-13 years.
Both the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Beagle are medium-sized dogs with powerful bodies. The Pit Bull’s coat can be any variety of colors while the Beagle is typically stu color or white and may have some black tips.
The Pit Bull has a shorter, thicker shaped nose than the Beagle.
Pit Bulls are very energetic and exercise is mandatory. Beagles are active indoors and will do best with at least a large yard to run around in.
Beagles are very friendly and playful while Pit Bulls are described as either “great with kids” or “better with adults”. Beagles are usually great with kids and other dogs while Pit Bulls do well with people they know but can be suspicious of strangers.
Pit bulls have a tendency to become protective and will act as a guard dog without needing any special training. Beagles are not guard dogs by nature although they can be protective.
