German Shepherds are known for their loyalty and devotion. They have been bred for centuries to serve humans. Therefore they must be trained from birth to do so. A dog’s training includes obedience, tracking, herding, guarding and other tasks that require them to work together with humans.
The German Shepherd Dog is one of the most popular breeds in the world today due to its loyal nature and ability to perform these duties well even when under extreme stress or danger. However, there are some drawbacks to owning a German Shepherd. Some of these disadvantages include:
They tend to bark at everything that moves. This may not bother you if your house is quiet, but it will annoy neighbors who live near yours. If you don’t want your neighbor’s dogs barking at you all the time, then consider getting another breed of dog instead such as a Labrador Retriever or Pomeranian.
They are very energetic and need regular exercise. They love running around outdoors and playing with other dogs. You can train your German Shepherd to stay inside while you’re gone, but they’ll still enjoy being outside doing what they like best.
If you own a large family, then you might have problems feeding them all the food that they need because of their size.
They shed a lot and their fur can get all over your clothing, furniture, and house. You will need to vacuum and sweep more often to keep the extra fur picked up.
They can also be noisy when they bark or howl. You may love the sound of it, but your neighbors probably won’t be as appreciative.
If you work long hours or travel frequently then you may not have enough time to properly exercise or spend with your German Shepherd. These dogs can suffer from a lot of separation anxiety if they are left alone for extended periods of time.
Despite these minor issues, many people still choose to own German Shepherds because of their unique personalities. These dogs are extremely loyal and will do whatever it takes to protect the ones that they love. They have great instincts when it comes to guarding and police work.
They also excel at obedience competitions and working with children with special needs.
If you don’t mind the extra maintenance that these dogs require then they can make a great addition to your family. They are usually very healthy dogs and can live for up to 10 years. Choosing the right German Shepherd is important because you want one that will grow up to meet your expectations.
If you are looking to adopt or buy a GSD, then do your research first to make sure that you get the right dog for you.
