A Guide To Choosing A Good Dog Food For Your Pup

In the world of pet care, there are many choices to make when choosing a new diet or supplement for your furry friend. There are so many brands out there, formulas and ingredients that it’s hard to know what’s good and what isn’t. You have to try them all before making a decision!

The problem is, there are so many options that it’s impossible to do it right. So if you’re like me, you’ll probably end up buying something from one of those “experts” who give their opinion on which product they think will work best for your pup. They may even tell you how much money it costs to feed your dog properly (which I’m sure is a lot).

I’ve tried a few different types of dog foods over the years, but my favorite has always been homemade food. My dogs love eating it because it tastes better than anything else I can buy at the store. And I don’t have to worry about feeding them any other kind of food.

So why not just stick with what works? Why spend time trying to figure out which brand is best for your pooch?

I mean, some of the experts don’t even agree with one another anyway.

I made a spreadsheet of all the formulas available at my local pet store. Then, I picked the ones that I think would be most similar to my own homemade recipes.

It’s important to know that certain dog foods are better for different sized dogs. Obviously, a smaller dog food company isn’t going to have as much variety as a bigger one.

However, large or small, they should all have a puppy food. This is the one you want to look out for, as it’s specifically made for dogs that are still growing and have special nutritional needs.

Some companies only make dog food and don’t deal with other products. Others also sell treats, cat food, horse food, and more.

The size of a company isn’t as important as how long they’ve been in business. You want to find one that’s been around for years and has a good reputation.

Some of the popular dog food companies are Alpo, Eukanuba, Iams, Kibbles ‘n Bits, Ol’Roy, Pedigree, Science Diet, and Taste of the Wild. These are just a few of the most popular ones and there are many more out there.

I’m sure there are several different brands that would be just as good as the ones I mentioned, these are just the ones I’ve personally had experience with.

What to Look for in a Good Brand of Dog Food

There are several things you should look for when picking out a new dog food. The main thing is the ingredients. You want to look for foods that have plenty of meat based proteins such as chicken, lamb, beef, duck and others.

You also want to watch out for if they add any unnecessary fillers, sugars, or other ingredients into the food. Some of these are okay in small amounts, but you should try to focus on getting foods with limited ingredients as much as possible.

However, this isn’t always possible and there are several reasons for this. One of the main ones is that some foods use meats such as beef hearts, liver, or even chicken frames. These can be hard to find and more expensive, so it might not be practical for all dog foods to use these ingredients.

Secondly, some dog food companies will use lower quality meats such as those listed below. These meats aren’t as nutritious, and can lead to many health problems down the road. This is one of the reasons you should consider a higher quality food or make your own if possible.

Some of the lower quality meats you might see in dog food include:

Beef & Bone Meal

Poultry By-Product Meal

These ingredients are less than ideal and you definitely want to try to avoid any foods containing these. Above all, you want to focus on the first three, as these are the most common in lower quality foods.

By-products can include almost anything in an animal such as beaks, legs, lungs, spleen, and even manure. These are not good for your dog and can cause health issues over time.

Otherwise, a food is made up of the same ingredients as every other bag of food. You want to look for foods that have limited ingredients listed, all of which you recognize as either a type of meat or vegetable. As long as you pay attention to this, you can have peace of mind that your canine is getting the highest quality of food.

How Much & How Often to Feed Your Dog

The other thing you need to know about dog food is how much your dog needs to eat and how often they should be eating it. This will differ from breed to breed, but in general, most dogs will do just fine with eating 1/4 – 1/2 cup of food per day, per ten pounds of weight.

If you’re unsure of exactly how much to feed your dog, I recommend going to see your veterinarian so they can tell you what your exact dog needs.

There are a couple of ways to feed your dog as well. You can either leave out a certain amount of food for them to nibble on throughout the day, or you can make sure they finish their entire meal within a certain time frame.

If you’re going to leave food out for your dog, just make sure it’s in a place where the whole bag won’t get contaminated or spoiled, such as the refrigerator or a cool basement. Leaving it out on the kitchen counter could lead to bugs and other critters getting into the bag.

You can also feed your dog twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Usually, this is what most people do. Make sure you’re feeding them at roughly the same time each day so they can count on it. Dogs are creatures of habit and like to have set routines, so this will help immensely.

Whatever you do, just make sure you’re consistent. This will help keep your dog mentally stable and even emotionally stable. They like knowing what to expect and if you start changing things up on them, they won’t know how to handle it and could end up getting anxious or upset.

If you do have a set routine and schedule for feeding your dog, then you won’t have to worry too much about them overeating. Most dogs won’t overeat as long as you’re providing them with high quality and nutritious food.

How to Know if Your Dog is Getting Fat

If you’ve been feeding your dog the same amount for quite some time and they start getting fat, then you need to cut back on their food.

If you’ve been feeding your dog the same amount for quite some time and they stay the same weight, then you need to feed them a little bit more. Be very cautious with this, as feeding them too much can lead to health issues of their own.

Most of the time, overweight dogs are just eating too much or not getting enough exercise. Make sure you’re keeping an eye on how much they’re eating and make sure they’re getting enough exercise as well.

Feeding your dog the right amount is one of the most important things you can do for them. If they don’t get enough food, they’ll start to feel under the weather and run down. This can lead to a lot of other issues down the road. Keep this in mind at all times.

Keeping a Balanced Diet

Just like with people, dogs need to keep a balanced diet. They need plenty of protein, fat, and carbs. While some commercial dog foods try to keep this in mind, it’s best if you can feed your dog a mixture of food. This could include ground meat, whole chicken slices, mashed potatoes, and oatmeal.
