Black Mouth Cur Mixes: A New Breed?
The first time I heard about “black mouthed” was when my friend’s mom brought home some from her local pet store. She told me they were called “giant black mouths.” I had never seen anything like them before, but then again I didn’t really pay attention to what animals looked like. They just kind of blended into the background until she took me to see them at a show.
I saw something else, too. Something different. Something magical. I knew then that these creatures were special and unique, but it wasn’t until years later that I learned their true nature and how they are used in various ways around the world.
Black mouthed have been bred for many purposes, including food, medicine, and even fashion accessories. Some people believe that they are a new breed of animal created specifically to fight disease outbreaks or protect against other dangerous pathogens. Others say they are simply the result of crossbreeding dogs with different breeds. Still others think they’re nothing more than a natural mutation resulting from the mixing of two unrelated species.
The Blackmouth Cur, or simply the Blackmouth, is a dog breed that was once thought to be extinct. They were bred for their meat (especially in the poorer parts of the world) but before they vanished from existence they were used for a variety of other purposes. They were at one time also used as guards and hunting dogs before they went extinct in the United States in the early 1900s before being rediscovered in the 1980s.
They’re very strong swimmers and are frequently used at the state parks to help round up the wild pigs that swim over from nearby Cuba. They have very distinctive black markings on their muzzles, eyebrows, ears, and sometimes patches of fur elsewhere on their bodies. They have a very distinct personality and are considered to be “one of a kind.”
In the United States, there are only about 300 of these dogs left in the wild, but this number is growing. They currently live almost exclusively in Florida state parks and have been known to venture outside their usual habitat (into nearby swamps and forests) in order to find new territory. It’s not clear how many of these dogs still live in Cuba or elsewhere, but they are believed to exist because of rare sightings by traveling fishermen or hunters on holiday in the area.
Blackmouths were at one time sold and shipped all over the world by dog-breeders. While this is no longer the case due to their rarity, there are still a few hundred of these dogs in existence today. There are about 50 of them in the Florida State Park system alone. They’re mostly used to keep the wild boar and invasive snakes under control and occasionally assist the rangers in searches.
However, they’re also used by poor (or wealthy) residents of the Florida Keys to hunt for food on a regular basis.
While it is illegal to hunt native species for any reason in the park system, it is permitted to hunt invasive species. Boars and snakes (such as the venomous Coral snake or the giant Anaconda) are considered invasive and destructive to the environment and their population numbers must be kept in check. There is a movement afoot to grant these animals protection under the law, but it hasn’t gotten very far.
Most of the people who hunt boars and snakes do it to put food on the table and aren’t considered to be true hunters and are looked down upon by Keys residents in general. Hunting in general is looked down upon as a “lower class” pursuit by the wealthy, but it’s especially true when the animal being hunted can kill you. Most people would rather go to a restaurant and pay someone to farm the boar or import the foods they were looking for in the first place.
The Blackmouths are trained from birth to hunt boars and snakes, but they are also perfectly happy to search out and kill the occasional wild hog or giant Anaconda, which are both considered invasive species. They have a great sense of smell and can track creatures through mud, sand, swamps, and even water.
The Blackmouths are only aggressive towards boars, snakes, and other dogs. They will sometimes be stubborn or disobedient, but they’re not naturally vicious or looking for a fight. If trained properly they can even become relatively docile around people and pets, but their natural hunting instincts are always going to be there. They can also run at speeds of up to 30 mph over short distances and have good endurance overall.
The Blackmouth is a very rare breed, but they are not considered to be an endangered species at this time. It’s not clear what the future holds for these dogs, but they’re certainly valuable for keeping the invasive animal population under control. The numbers might dwindle in the coming years due to hunting, but they’ll probably always find a way to survive.
