The name: Catahoula Leopard

Many people simply call this dog a Catahoula Hound, Catahoula Leopard Dog or even a Catahoula Bulldog. No matter what you may wish to call it, this breed is as far from being a bulldog as it can get!

It has been suggested that the Catahoula might be a distant relative of the English Bulldog and the French Mastiff although this is still under review.

The origin of this breed:

The exact origins of the Catahoula breed are somewhat uncertain but it is known that they have been around since the early 1800’s at least. They originated in Louisiana in the United States and were bred primarily as hunting dogs by local hunters there.

Many different types of dog were bred into the Catahoula Hound to create the breed as it is known today including, but not limited to: Bloodhounds, Greyhounds, Bulldogs and Terriers. The Catahoula has only a passing resemblance to these breeds however as selective breeding has changed the look of the Catahoula over the years.

The name “Catahoula” is of Native American origins and means “Blue Devil” although it is not known why these people would call the breed by this name. It has been suggested that the origin of the name comes from the fact that these dogs were often used to track and hunt Native Americans who had “painted themselves blue for spiritual reasons” although again, there is no absolute proof of this.

In more recent years, the Catahoula breed has been declared an American National Historic Animal by the American Kennel Club.

The Catahoula is an attractive looking dog with short fur and muscular structure. They normally stand from 30 to 45 cm high (12 to 18 in) at the shoulder and weigh from 18 to 32 kg (40 to 70 lb).

The Catahoula breed is an intelligent dog that is easy to train. It is usually friendly with other dogs and animals although some can be fiercely protective of their owners.

They make good watchdogs. Owners should be careful not to confuse this breed’s loyalty for weakness though as many can be fiercely defensive of their owners when necessary! The Catahoula breed makes an excellent guard dog.

The Catahoula breed can make a good family pet but as with all breeds, there are exceptions. It is important to remember that a dog, no matter how well trained, will always follow its instinct.

This means that even the best behaved dog can be trouble if it is left unattended and is allowed to mix with other dogs. The Catahoula is definitely best in a home without other pets.

The Catahoula breed can suffer from a number of health problems. As with all breeds, the larger breeds are more susceptible to hip dysplasia, heart disorders and osteoarthritis although all breeds can suffer from dislocating their shoulders as well as intervertebral disc disease.

It is also prone to cataracts, retinal atrophy, glaucoma, sub-aortic stenosis and bladder stones.

It is recommended that owners ensure their dog is kept at a healthy weight and given joint exercises to prevent possible disorders later in life.
