Feeding A Miniature Poodle Puppy – Diet Tips And Scheduling Ideas
Miniature poodles are very active and love to play. They need lots of exercise and they get bored easily. If you want your miniature poodle puppy to have a good life, then it’s best not to overfeed them or give too many treats at once. You must provide enough food so that their energy level remains high.
The amount of food that you feed your poodle puppy depends on several factors such as its age, size, activity level and other physical characteristics. Some things to consider when feeding your miniature poodle puppy include:
How old is your pup?
Puppies grow at different rates. For example, some will reach full adult size within 6 months while others may take longer. When deciding how much to feed your pup, keep these factors in mind.
What type of dog is your pup?
Some dogs like to hunt and chase small animals and birds; others prefer playing with other dogs; still others enjoy running around on the floor. Each one of these preferences affects how much food you should provide.
Is your pup overweight? Does it suffer from arthritis or allergies?
These conditions could affect how much food you should offer.
Does your pup have a high activity level? Does it play hard and then sleep for longer than average periods of time?
Once again, this requires you to adjust how much food you should offer.
These are just some of the things that you need to take into consideration when deciding how much food to give your miniature poodle. The good news is that you will soon develop a sense of what’s “average” for your particular pup. Then you can go from there.
What do Poodle Puppies Eat?
Miniature Poodle Feeding Schedule
The type of food that you feed your poodle is very important. You should buy the best dog food that you can afford. Look for one with high protein and low grains. This will help to build strong muscles and bones.
There are also special puppy foods available. These are usually divided into three stages.
While you should gradually change foods as your puppy grows, you can use the same feeding schedule. Take a look at this sample schedule:
Puppy Food Schedule
8 Weeks to 3 Months – At this age, your poodle will eat three meals per day. Each meal should be divided into approximately six small meals.
3 Months to 6 Months – You poodle will now be eating two to three meals per day. Each meal should be divided into four to five small meals.
6 Months to 1 Year – You poodle can now eat one to two meals per day. Each meal should be divided into three small meals.
1 Year On – Your poodle can now eat two to three meals per day. You can feed it once a day if you prefer. Just divide the food into two or three equal portions and feed it over the course of the day.
How much should I feed my Poodle?
The amount that you feed your poodle depends on its size and age. Most owners feed their poodle as much as it will eat in a single feeding. This usually works out to be 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food per pound of body weight. However, if your pup is smaller than average or has a fast metabolism you may need to offer it a little more food. On the other hand, if it is larger than average or has a slower metabolism it may not even need quite as much.
Once again, you will soon learn to tell by the way your pup acts when it is hungry and when it is full. For example, if your pup starts begging for food and then turns away what you have offered it, this usually means that it has had enough food. On the other hand, if your pup turns away food it usually means that it is still hungry.
How Often Should I Feed My Poodle?
Once again, this depends on your poodle’s age and size. In general, however, you will want to feed your poodle two to three times per day. Miniature poodles under six months old should be fed twice daily. Those between six months and one year should be fed three times a day.
After your poodle reaches its first birthday you can cut back to two feedings daily. If you prefer you can also just offer your poodle free-choice food. This means leaving a full bowl of food out at all times and allowing it to eat as desired.
Where Should I Put the Food?
It’s important to always put your poodle’s food in the same place so that it learns to eat there. You should first put the food down when you first get your poodle. Then, whenever you feed it, you should put the food in the same place. This will help your poodle learn to expect the food to be in the same place.
You can also do this with water. You should always have a water bowl available for your poodle. However, you should only fill this bowl part way. Over time, your poodle will learn to drink from this bowl rather than other water bowls or your faucet.
Should I Bath My Poodle?
If your poodle gets dirty then you may want to consider bathing it. However, many poodle owners choose to have this done professionally and only bathe their poodles when necessary.
If you are going to bathe your poodle at home you will need to use a washcloth and rubber gloves. Never use human shampoo on dogs as this can be very dangerous for them. Instead, you should buy special dog shampoo that is safe for them to use.
What Else Should I Know?
Never give your poodle soda of any kind. This includes diet soda, cola, and even root beer. All of these contain ingredients that can be very harmful for dogs. It is best just to keep all food and drinks other than plain water away from your poodle altogether.
You should also be aware that poodles have very powerful noses. They are actually more like a superhero’s radar than a normal person’s nose! It is very easy for them to pick up on smells that we can’t smell at all.
This means that if you go into a dirty place or somewhere with a strange smell your dog is likely to remember this smell long after the event. It is best to try to keep your poodle in clean surroundings so that it doesn’t become afraid of everyday situations.
Poodles are also very good guard dogs. They tend to bark at anything that is new or different than what is usually around them. If a poodle is patrolling your house at night it is likely to start barking at passing cars, people walking down the street, or even the wind.
Poodles can also be trained to perform a number of different tricks. They are very intelligent dogs and can be trained in the same way as a border collie. They can even do some of the same tricks that a border collie can do.
Poodles are very sweet and affectionate dogs. If you are a calm person that doesn’t yell or become loud at unexpected times then your poodle is very likely to follow your lead. They will rarely bark without reason and are almost always calm and collected no matter what happens.
Poodles can live happily in apartments if they are given plenty of exercise outside of their home. However, they do need a good amount of space to run around and play each day. It’s best to have a house with a large yard so that your poodle can get the exercise that it needs.
